Accessibility statement

The Asaish Erbil portal is built so that every citizen — regardless of ability, age, or device — can find information and request help. This statement explains where we stand today and how to reach us if something gets in your way.

Standards we follow

We aim to conform with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. Our development team runs automated and manual audits before each public release, including testing with screen readers and keyboard-only navigation.

What works well today

  • Keyboard navigation

Every page can be navigated with the Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter and Space keys. Skip-to-content links appear on focus at the top of each page.

  • Screen-reader support

All interactive controls expose accessible names and roles. Landmarks (header, main, navigation, footer) are present on every page so VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA and JAWS users can jump between sections.

  • Text resizing & reflow

The portal supports browser zoom up to 200% without loss of content or function. Text uses relative units so system font-size preferences are respected.

  • Colour and contrast

Body text meets a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against its background. Status colours (success, warning, error) are never used as the only signal — icons and text labels accompany them.

  • Captions and alternatives

Informative images include descriptive alt text. Decorative images are hidden from assistive tech. Pre-recorded videos include subtitles in Kurdish, Arabic and English where available.

  • Reduced motion

Animations honour the operating-system 'reduce motion' setting. Auto-rotating carousels can be paused.

  • Multilingual content

Pages are available in Kurdish (Sorani), Arabic and English. The page's language attribute is set correctly so screen readers switch pronunciation automatically.

Known limitations

We are open about what we have not yet solved:

  • Some legacy PDF documents in the Downloads section may not yet be fully tagged for screen readers — accessible HTML alternatives are being added.
  • A small number of third-party embeds (live traffic cameras, social media) inherit their providers' accessibility levels and may not meet WCAG 2.1 AA.
  • Live audio briefings are transcribed within 48 hours; real-time captioning is not yet available.

Report a barrier

If a page, form, or document keeps you from completing what you came for, please tell us so we can fix it. We aim to respond within five working days.

Need a different format?

We can provide official notices and reports in large print, plain language, audio, or Kurdish sign-language video on request — at no charge. Use the contact form above or call our outreach desk during office hours.
